Breast Milk antibody Reduce HIV Transmission

Breast Milk Antibodies is believed to be capable of neutralizing the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and kill body cells infected with HIV.

This was revealed in a paper in the September issue of the Journal of Virology 2011. ''These findings suggest that increased responses through vaccination could help reduce HIV transmission through breast-feeding,''said the authors of a paper, Sallie Permar, from Duke University, Durham, NC, as quoted sciencedaily.com site.

While HIV-specific antibodies have been identified in breast milk, this is the first study to investigate the function of these antibodies block viruses.

However, statistics show that breast milk antibodies do not work perfectly in protecting infants from HIV transmission. Nearly half of the 350,000 new HIV infections each year occur in infants is transmitted through breast milk. Permar studies provide perspective that it shows the amount of anti-HIV response of breast milk is still low compared to those located in the plasma.

Therefore, the response needs to be improved. Fortunately, the study results suggest that current HIV vaccine candidates may be effective for improving systemic anti-HIV function of breast milk antibodies, as well as reducing postpartum HIV transmission. Permar and his colleagues found that the activity of breast milk antibodies to HIV and HIV-infected cells mediated by antibody LGG derived from the bloodstream, rather than antibodies LGA, which produced the mammary gland.
